B.R.M. Engined Lotus Elan
The Rebuild - The Chassis

Strip Down    Roll Cage    Running Gear    Engine    Bodywork

During the strip down I realised I would need a new chassis - the old one was slightly tired, from it's previous racing career - OK for road use but not really safe for motorsport. It would need 'blasting' and repainting.
I obtained a Lotus 26R type race chassis from a very helpful Tony Thompson.

On collecting the chassis from TTR, I decided to compare the old chassis dimensions with the new one. I was surprised to find that the new chassis was 5mm shorter than the old one! Offering up the new chassis to the bodyshell was not straight forward. The difference in length meant that there was very little room left on the short extensions for the front mounting point. (where the steering rack locates). See image below  - click on it for a larger version.

After a great deal of head scratching, I managed to ease the chassis forward by a few mm’s to obtain a reasonable location for the front mounts.

The chassis was placed beneath the suspended bodyshell and the original body mounting points were transferred to the new chassis, by marking the chassis with an pen through the old body mounting holes.

Marking the chassis using the body bobbins as locators, seemed straight forward, I used masking tape on the chassis so that the marker pen left a clear mark for centre punching and correct drilling. There was no problem tapping the chassis and checking the bolt fitting.
At this stage I decided to ‘Waxoyle’ the internal parts of the chassis even though it had already been stove enamelled.

The chassis was placed on a home-made trolley to aid with the build-up.
